What makes Connections Hint appealing is that it forces players to think about the structure of words, not just words that share a common subject. The first three groups in a connections hint puzzle tend to be rather familiar, because they are based on semantic ties, such as a group of foods, or emotions, or things connected to a particular field. The “Purple” category, in contrast, seems to operate on language mechanics. While the four answers may not seem to have any connection in meaning, they do make a certain type of wordplay – hidden words, homophones, missing letters, or adding a prefix to construct a new word. Instead of picking right away, try putting that group on the whole board and see what words remain. If the four remaining words, after discarding four items, cannot be divided into three full sets, the original selection probably had a "red herring" (a misleading distractor). This means that solving Connections is more of a systematic exercise in deduction.
