I opened Block Blast on my desktop during a break that I had mentally budgeted at five minutes. I had a cup of coffee going cold, a tab open for actual work, and a firm belief that I was only stopping by for a quick visit. Forty minutes later the coffee was undrinkable, the work tab was still untouched, and I was leaning toward my monitor like a chess grandmaster, deeply worried about where to put a blue L-shaped block. That is the thing about a block puzzle game. It never announces that it has taken over your afternoon. It just quietly does.

Playing in a browser turned out to matter more than I expected. No install, no account, no update nagging me about storage space. I opened a tab, and there it was. And here is the part that genuinely got me: a mouse is a surprisingly pleasant way to play this. Dragging pieces across a screen is a different sort of satisfaction than poking at glass with a thumb, and on a larger display I could actually see the whole grid at once, which made those little gaps easier to spot before they became problems.

The whole loop is dead simple to describe. Three or more blocks sit at the bottom of the screen. You drag one onto the board and drop it wherever it fits. Fill an entire row or column and it vanishes, opening up space again. That is it. No timer, nobody rushing you, nowhere to be but right there with your questionable decisions. And that calm is exactly what makes it dangerous. With unlimited time to think, I think about every single placement, which means I care about every single placement, which means losing the board feels less like a lost round and more like a personal failure.

The early game is almost insultingly easy. You clear a couple of lines, the score climbs, and you start believing you have cracked the code. That confidence is a trap. I once slid a block into what looked like a harmless spot near an edge, feeling very clever about it, only to discover about six moves later that the spot I had just walled off was the only place a piece would ever have fit sideways. Then I sat there, studying a board with three empty spaces shaped just barely like nothing at all, waiting for a piece that never came, quietly reevaluating my whole personality.

The gaps are what get you. Not the dramatic ones. The single empty squares buried between blocks, the ones too small for anything but the most specific shape. And of course you never get that shape. You get three more chunky rectangles, each one essentially asking you to make an even worse decision than the last.

I did learn a thing or two, mostly by losing. Now I actually look at all three available pieces before touching anything, because placing the first one you like is how these disasters start. I try to keep room for the shapes I cannot see coming yet, and I resist the urge to plug every empty space just because I can. Space is not wasted. Space is room to breathe, and breathing room is the entire game.

What keeps me coming back is hard to justify. It is not the score. It is the moment when a placement clicks and two lines collapse at once, and everything feels briefly, unreasonably tidy. Then the next set of blocks appears, and the tidy feeling is gone. If you have a few minutes and a browser tab to spare, Block Blast is waiting. Just do not trust yourself when you say you are only playing one round.
