The Thaumaturgy Device in Last Epoch is a pivotal crafting tool introduced within the Rune Prison Complex, designed to enable players to create and modify Experimental affixes on certain equipment, specifically belts, gloves, and boots. This device became central to the experimental crafting system introduced in Season 2, replacing older methods tied to rare drops from Exiled mages Last Epoch Gold. The device allows you to swap out one prefix on eligible items (those already having at least two prefixes and no prior Experimental affix) to craft powerful new Experimental affixes up to tier 5, greatly expanding gear customization possibilities.

To use the Thaumaturgy Device, players must first unlock it by defeating the Rune Wardens in the Rune Prison Complex, which lowers the magical barrier blocking access. Once accessible, the device consumes special crafting runes—namely the Rune of Havoc, Rune of Redemption, and Rune of Weaving—allowing for the generation or rerolling of Experimental affixes. Higher-tier prefixes on the base item increase the chance of crafting higher-tier Experimental affixes. Notably, Experimental affixes affect unique mechanics and cannot be sealed or crafted from shards like regular affixes, making the Thaumaturgy Device the exclusive method for their generation.

Experimental affixes include unique, powerful bonuses unavailable elsewhere, such as enhanced minion damage or special buffs that significantly alter gameplay. Getting the desired affixes requires precise management of an item's attributes, as the crafting involves a chance-based reroll. Players often use strategies to protect or manipulate existing prefixes to avoid losing valuable high-tier mods during rerolls. For example, crafting with three low-tier prefixes and one target high-tier suffix can improve success rates in retaining crucial attributes. Some community strategies rely on the Rune of Havoc to switch Experimental affixes between prefixes and suffixes after crafting, adding flexibility but also complexity in planning.

Additionally, players can use Glyphs of Insight—special consumables that drop from Exiled mages—to target craft-specific Experimental affixes in conjunction with the Thaumaturgy Device. The process requires meeting hidden, item-type-specific criteria such as total tier count or item level, which influences the chance of triggering the desired affix. Tools and calculators developed by the community help players optimize these requirements to efficiently craft sought-after Experimental affixes, greatly reducing wasted materials and crafting attempts.

The overall crafting workflow surrounding the Thaumaturgy Device emphasizes balance between RNG (randomness) and strategic planning. Because Experimental affixes cannot be sealed or crafted by conventional means, players rely on the device to innovate item power, especially for endgame content. It integrates tightly with other crafting elements introduced in Season 2 of Last Epoch, including new runes and crafting materials, allowing deep customization and progression for players focused on high-tier gear optimization and min-maxing.

In summary, the Thaumaturgy Device is a specialized crafting mechanism in Last Epoch that facilitates exclusive Experimental affix crafting by utilizing key runes and defeating boss encounters to unlock the crafting interface in the Rune Prison Complex. Mastery of its use involves understanding affix tiers, item prerequisites, and advanced crafting strategies, including the use of Glyphs of Insight. This device represents the forefront of item customization for belts, boots, and gloves, offering players unparalleled opportunities to enhance their gear’s power, tailor their builds, and push further into endgame challenges buy Last Epoch Gold.
